The historical roots of Neyriz date back to the Achaemenid era, with the city being mentioned over 15 times in inscriptions from this period, highlighting its significant status and prominence in ancient times. During the Sassanian period, Neyriz was also one of the important and thriving cities of Iran. In the Islamic era, particularly during the Safavid period, it was recognized as the capital of one of Iran's provinces.
Neyriz is located south of Lake Bakhtegan, west of Sirjan and Shahrebabak (Kerman), east of Estahban (Fars), southwest of Khatam County (Yazd), and north of Darab and Hajiabad (Hormozgan). This unique geographical location endows Neyriz with diverse climatic conditions and numerous natural attractions.
Neyriz boasts a diverse and dynamic economy based on agriculture, industry, and tourism. The city is a significant agricultural hub in Iran, producing high-quality products such as pomegranates, almonds, walnuts, pistachios, and saffron. Additionally, Neyriz has long been home to a variety of industries, including mining, food processing, and textiles.
The diverse historical, natural, and cultural attractions of Neyriz—including archaeological sites, historic buildings, natural tourist areas, and traditional villages—combine to make the city an appealing destination for tourists. As of 2016, Neyriz had an estimated population of around 113,291. The residents speak Persian and the local Neyrizi dialect and are deeply committed to their rich and authentic cultural heritage.
The Bahramgor Protected Area (Conservation Area), located about 25 kilometers northeast of Neyriz County, is known for its high biodiversity and stunning desert landscapes, making it one of Iran's important protected areas. This region is particularly significant due to its substantial population of Persian onagers, one of the world's endangered species. One of the key objectives of Neyriz Ghadir Steel Complex is to provide financial and operational support to the Bahramgor Protected Area, especially in preserving the population of Persian onagers.
Archaeological evidence suggests that Neyriz was a significant center of metalworking and production of military equipment during the Achaemenid period, serving as the capital of casting and weapon production in Iran. With over 700 active workshops producing spears, swords, and armor, Neyriz played a crucial role in equipping the army of Darius the Great. Archaeological findings in the area, including the discovery of iron smelting furnaces and metal tools, strongly support this claim. Additionally, according to some accounts, Neyriz was also a major steel-making center during the Pishdadian era.
Neyriz is proud of the Kumayl Division which has sacrificed 500 martyrs, 1300 veterans, and 52 Prisoners of war to Iran during the eight years of the Iran-Iraq War.
The development of Neyriz city and its surrounding areas is of tremendous importance to Neyriz Ghadir Steel Complex. Some of the actions taken by the complex include the development of urban infrastructure like stadiums and assembly halls, monitoring the employment status of the local residents, conducting recruitment tests, following up on the status of martyrs' families, and providing support to deprived and underprivileged areas.
Bakhtegan Lake is the second largest lake in Iran, following Lake Urmia, and the largest central lake in Iran. It is 120 kilometers long and is situated between the cities of Neyriz, Estahbani, Bakhtegan Kharameh, and Arsenjanin in the Fars province. The lake serves as a winter habitat for birds migrating from Russia and the Siberian plains to Iran.
Tarm Waterfall is one of the highest seasonal waterfalls in the Middle East, located five kilometers from the city of Neyriz in the province of Fars. The waterfall originates from several springs on the slopes of the southern mountains of the city of Neyriz and after passing through the fig trees, it flows into the Gor-Ab
In the heart of Neyriz stands a historic fortress known as S.P.R, which reflects a part of Iran's tumultuous history. Built in the post-Islamic era, this fortress was reconstructed during World War I by the British forces known as S.P.R (South Persia Rifles). Neyriz, due to its strategic location on the route connecting major cities such as Kerman, Yazd, Bandar Abbas, Shiraz, and Isfahan, held significant military importance. Consequently, the British constructed this robust fortress using stone, clay, and mortar to dominate the region. Today, the remains of this historic fortress serve as a tourist attraction in Neyriz, welcoming history and architecture enthusiasts.
Mirza Ahmad Neyrizi, a shining star in the realm of Persian calligraphy during the 14th century AH (Islamic calendar), was born in Neyriz in 1072 AH and passed away in the same city in 1127 AH.
Mirza Ahmad Neyrizi was skilled in various styles of calligraphy, with his mastery most notably demonstrated in the scripts of Naskh and Riq'ah. His valuable works, which exemplify the elegance and beauty of Persian calligraphy, are now preserved in many museums and private collections around the world.
The exact date of the construction of Mirza Ahmad Neyrizi's tomb is not known, but some experts believe that it was built in 1127 AH (Islamic calendar), following his death.
The current design of this historical monument is the result of the efforts of Hooshang Seyhoun, one of Iran's most prominent architects and artists. Drawing inspiration from traditional Iranian architecture, Sehoun has given the tomb a modern and renewed appearance.
